Dr. Diljot Kaur Soin

Dr. Soin is a compassionate, competent and culturally responsible counsellor/ therapist who has been committed to providing mental health services to diverse client population majorly to adolescents, adults and couples, a few seniors, children and families including Caucasians and Asians for over 10 years. She has significant training and experience in the area of mental health, career counselling and development.

 

Dr. Soin is working as psychological associate with Dr. Tanya Elez. She worked as an associate at a community agency Moving Forward Family Services for a number of years and provided counselling services to local and immigrant population in the community with low/no income including non-English speaking individuals. Dr. Soin provided counselling services in the Fraser Valley Institution, Correctional Services, BC, Canada.

 

Dr. Soin’s areas of practice include anxiety and stress-related disorders, mood issues, personality disorders, couples counselling, career assessment and coaching. She specializes in psychological assessments and treatment including cognitive behaviour therapy, mental-health training and mindfulness, trauma focused cognitive behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy), solution-focused therapy, and narrative therapy.

 

Dr. Soin has worked with couples from multicultural backgrounds and provided counselling on issues related to managing family dynamics, navigating inter-cultural and intergenerational conflicts, overcoming betrayal and infidelity, practicing forgiveness, anger and stress management, managing family planning and changing roles.

 

Dr. Soin is a passionate teacher who has taught Bachelor’s and Master’s level University courses for a number of years. Her teaching experience includes teaching introductory psychology, clinical psychology, social psychology, industrial/ organizational psychology at Adler University, University of the Fraser Valley and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She supervised Master’s Dissertation thesis in the field of Psychology.

 

Dr. Soin’s research interests are in the areas of personality type, emotional intelligence, mental health and well-being, organizational psychology. She was part of a prestigious research project titled “Building trust to facilitate access to dementia care for immigrant older adults” with Simon Fraser University, BC where she acted as a critical friend between provincial Alzheimer Societies like Alzheimer Society of BC and Fraser Health, health authorities and community-based immigrant-serving agencies to improve access to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias, associated supports and services for immigrant older adults and their families. She was part of another prestigious project on health determinants of South-Asian immigrants in Canada suffering with Diabetes where she conducted literature review of data from Fraser health, and other community health agencies in BC.

Dr. Soin completed her PhD in Psychology, and holds a Master’s degree in Psychology, Bachelor’s degree with honours in Psychology, and post graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling. In addition to her formal education, Dr. Soin has received training as mental health practitioner and trainer from Scandinavian International University, Őrebro, Sweden, and as Rehabilitation Personnel from Rehabilitation Council of India.

 

Dr. Soin’s registrations include: Registered Clinical Counsellor (#15120); Certified Rehabilitation Personnel (CRR#FC04527).

 

Dr. Soin’s certifications include: Certified Mental Training Practitioner; MBTI® Certified practitioner; Strong Interest Inventory® Certified practitioner; EQ-I 2.0 – EQ360 Certified practitioner.

 

Dr. Soin currently lives in Delta, BC. She enjoys travelling, visiting historic places and spending time with family.
